Hu Jintao Meets with Algerian President Bouteflika

On the morning of September 15, 2005, Chinese President Hu Jintao met in the hotel where he stayed in New York with his Algerian counterpart Abdelaziz Bouteflika. Both sides held in-depth talks on bilateral relations and major international and regional issues of common concern.

Hu noted that Bouteflika is an old friend of the Chinese people. The two countries always support each other and maintain close cooperation no matter in terms of bilateral relations or in the international affairs and can be said as the showcase of solidarity and cooperation between developing nations. Under the current international situation, it is of great importance for China and Algeria to set up and develop the strategic partnership. He expressed hope that both sides continue working hard to constantly enrich the connotation of the strategic cooperation and make the tree of China-Algeria friendship more luxuriant.

When talking about further reinforcing the bilateral economic and trade relations, Hu said that both China and Algeria shoulder the task of developing the national economy and improving people's living standards. In recent years the bilateral economic and trade relations progress rapidly and the bilateral trade volume rises quickly. China is taking active measures to expand import from Algeria and promote the healthy and stable growth of bilateral trade relations. The bilateral cooperation in such fields as energy sources, telecommunications, transportation, infrastructure and human resources development continues achieving headways. The Chinese government will encourage more competitive enterprises to participate in the economic construction of Algeria.

Bouteflika noted that the Algerian people cherish the friendship with the Chinese people very much and attaches importance to constantly reinforcing bilateral exchanges and cooperation in various fields. Currently the two countries enjoy sound political relations and expanding economic and trade cooperation. An increasing number of Chinese companies have started business in Algeria. Algeria hopes further broaden the bilateral cooperation areas and consolidate the Algeria-China strategic partnership.

The two heads of state also exchanged opinions on some major international issues including the UN reform, agreed to build up coordination and cooperation on bilateral and multilateral occasions and better protect the legitimate rights and interests of developing nations.

Hu extended welcome to Bouteflika to pay the next visit to China at a time convenient. Bouteflika thanked the sincere invitation of the Chinese side and noted he is looking forward to arranging the visit as soon as possible so as to fully exchange views with the Chinese leaders and jointly push forward Algeria-China friendly cooperation.
