From January 13 to 15, the Chinese government condolence mission to countries hit by the Indian Ocean earthquake and following tsunamis visited Thailand.

During the visit, Thailand's Deputy Prime Minister Dr. Suwat Liptapanlop and Foreign Minister Dr. Surakiart Sathirathai met with the mission respectively. Wu Dawei, head of the mission and Vice Chinese Foreign Minister conveyed the sincere condolence of the Chinese government and people, expressed admiration on the effective relief efforts of the Thai government and people and extended heartfelt gratitude for their active help to Chinese citizens. Wu said that "China and Thailand are like members of the same family" and we take the difficulties faced by the Thai people as our own and stand ready to do our part in the disaster relief and reconstruction efforts of Thailand. The Thai leaders thanked the Chinese government and people for their cordial friendship and sincere support, highly commented the work of the Chinese Medics Team and DNA identification experts and expressed hope that the international community including China can deliver technological cooperation in the ecological protection and the establishment of the warning system in the wake of the tsunami disaster.

The mission left for the disaster-hit areas of Phang Nga and Phuket in the south of Thailand on January 14, obtained first-hand information about the damage, visited the victims and expressed greetings to the staffs of Chinese Embassy in Thailand and Consulate-General in Songkhla who have been providing assistance to the Chinese citizens there and the Chinese experts who are helping Thailand with DNA identification.
