Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing Talks Over Phone with His Counterparts of Several Countries Hit by the Earthquake and the Tsunami

On the afternoon of December 31, 2004, Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing held telephone conversations with the foreign ministers of Indonesia, Sri Lanka, India and Thailand respectively. On behalf of President Hu Jintao, Chairman Wu Bangguo of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), Premier Wen Jiabao of the State Council, Chairman Jia Qinglin of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) and the Chinese government and people, Li expressed the deepest sympathy and condolences to them over the heavy casualties and property losses caused by the earthquake and tsunami disasters and sincere gratitude to the governments of the countries that extended emergenfcy aid to besieged Chinese citizens.

Li said that the Chinese government will try its best to provide assistance based on the needs of the disaster-hit countries and help their people to rebuild home.

The foreign ministers of the four countries extended gratitude for China's generous assistance and highly complimented the support of the Chinese leaders, government and people for the people of their countries. Thai foreign minister Surakiart Sathirathai noted that the Thai government will continue to make every possible effort to help the Chinese travelers injured in the disaster.
