Hu Jintao Concludes Visit to Nigeria and Leaves for Kenya
2006/04/27

On April 27, 2006, Chinese President Hu Jintao left Abuja, capital of Nigeria, for Kenya after successfully concluding his two-day state visit to Nigeria.

During his visit to Nigeria, Hu held talks with President Olusegun Okikiola Aremu Obasanjo and met with Speakers of the Senate and House of Representatives of the Nigerian National Assembly. Both sides exchanged in-depth views on further developing bilateral relations, as well as international and regional issues of common interest. The two countries signed a range of cooperation agreements.

President Hu also addressed the Nigerian National Assembly, comprehensively expounding China-Africa relations and China's African policy under the new situation.

This visit, though very short, is conducive to building up mutual understanding and trust, deepening bilateral traditional friendship, expanding mutually beneficial cooperation in all areas and pushing for continuous development of strategic partnership.

This year marks the 35th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties. In recent years, bilateral relations have witnessed momentum of rapid development with frequent exchanges at all levels and mutual political trust strengthened. During President Obasanjo's visit to China in April 2005, Hu reached consensus with him on establishing strategic partnership of mutual political trust, mutual economic benefits and mutual assistance in international affairs.

Bilateral cooperation in the areas of agriculture, infrastructure construction, electric power and communications has been vigorously conducted. In 2005, bilateral trade volume reached 2.83 billion US dollars, an increase of 29.6% over the same period of the previous year. Both sides have conducted effective cooperation in international and regional affairs including counter-terrorism and peacekeeping.

Nigeria is the fourth leg of Hu's current five-nation tour and he has already visited the United States, Saudi Arabia and Morocco.
