Hu Jintao Meets with Speakers of the Senate and House of Representatives of the Nigerian National Assembly

On April 27, 2006, Chinese President Hu Jintao met with Speaker Kenechukwu Nnamani of the Senate and Speaker Aminu Masari of the House of Representatives of the Nigerian National Assembly in Abuja. Both sides exchanged views on strengthening bilateral relations and expanding parliamentary exchanges.

Hu indicated that both sides have established strategic partnership of mutual political trust, mutual economic benefits and mutual assistance in international affairs, which has guided the direction for development of bilateral relations, and thanks to these efforts China-Nigeria relations have entered a new development stage. In recent years, bilateral cooperation in the areas of trade, agriculture, energy, electric power, communications and satellites has made important progress and Nigeria has become one of China's most important economic and trade cooperative partners in Africa. Both sides have also maintained sound cooperation in international affairs and made unswerving efforts in safeguarding just rights and interest of developing nations and promoting world peace and development. China is satisfied with the status quo of development of bilateral relations.

China attaches great importance to developing bilateral relations and would like to work with Nigeria to earnestly implement their consensus reached during this visit, tap cooperation potential, deepen cooperation in all areas and push their strategic partnership to a new level. It is hoped that the two legislatures will continue to conduct exchanges, expand personnel contact, strengthen exchanges in legislation and other fields, enhance coordination and cooperation in the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) and other international occasions and continuously deepen China-Nigeria strategic partnership.

The two Speakers indicated that Nigerian people warmly welcome President Hu's visit. Bilateral relations have been strengthened in recent years and have entered the best period in history. Both sides have conducted fruitful cooperation in agriculture, trade, investment and other economic & trade areas. Bilateral economic and trade cooperation of mutual benefits has huge potential and to strengthen cooperation in this area will benefit people of the two countries and all West African nations. The Nigerian National Assembly supports both countries to deepen economic and trade cooperation and will offer facilitation for bilateral business cooperation in the area of law. The Nigerian National Assembly would like to strengthen exchanges between the two legislatures and push for steady development of strategic partnership.
