Hu Jintao Meets with Moroccan Prime Minister Jettou

On April 25, 2006, Chinese President Hu Jintao met with Moroccan Prime Minister Driss Jettou in Rabat and both sides exchanged views mainly on strengthening bilateral economic and trade cooperation of mutual benefits.

Hu indicated that bilateral economic and trade cooperation enjoys sound development momentum. Bilateral trade has grown rapidly and both sides have witnessed more dynamic two-way investment and an increasing of labor contract cooperation. Some Chinese enterprises have started business in Morocco.

Hu pointed out that both countries share sound politic relations with huge potential in economic and trade cooperation and it is hoped that they will jointly explore new ways and approaches for such cooperation to promote steady and sound development of bilateral trade. He put forward suggestions in the following four aspects. First, to expand bilateral trade and realize comprehensive balance. China's market is open to Morocco and China will increase imports from there and expand trade cooperation. Second, to define priority areas and strengthen investment cooperation. China will continue to support and encourage businesses with strength to invest and develop in Morocco. Both sides can strengthen investment cooperation in the areas of agriculture, fishery and oil and gas resources exploitation. Third, to advance contract cooperation and expand cooperative area. Chinese businesses would like to actively participate in Morocco's infrastructure construction programs in the areas of road, railway, tunnel and communications. Fourth, to expand tourism cooperation and enhance personnel exchanges. It is hoped that both sides will well implement the tourism agreement already agreed upon.

Jettou agreed with Hu's proposals. He added that his country hopes to become China's economic and trade cooperative partner, which conforms to Morocco's interest. Morocco has decided to construct a range of large infrastructure programs in the areas of road, port and electric power and looks forward to participation of Chinese businesses. The Moroccan government will offer preferential policies to Chinese enterprises so that they can invest and start business in Morocco successfully.

On the same day, Hu also met with the staff of the Chinese Embassy in Morocco and representatives from Chinese-funded institutions and overseas Chinese.
