On September 22, 2017 local time, Foreign Minister Wang Yi and UN Secretary-General António Guterres jointly attended the signing ceremony of the Memorandum of Understanding on the Belt and Road Initiative Between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People's Republic of China and the Department of Economic and Social Affairs of the United Nations held at the UN headquarters in New York.
Jointly signed by Permanent Representative to the UN Liu Jieyi and UN Under-Secretary-General Liu Zhenmin, the Memorandum covers such areas as practical cooperation, capacity building, experience sharing and policy analysis, aiming at pushing the two sides to strengthen cooperation, helping developing countries along the "Belt and Road" route to enhance their development capability, so as to advance the "Belt and Road" construction and implement the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
President Xi Jinping proposed the Belt and Road Initiative in 2013, which was universally accepted by the international community. The Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation held this May in Beijing has achieved fruitful outcomes. So far, China has already signed the "Belt and Road" cooperation documents with 74 countries and international organizations.
