State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi: Virus Knows No Borders and Requires Collective Response

2020/02/14

On 13 February local time in Berlin, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi and German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas held a joint press conference after a bilateral diplomatic and security strategic dialogue.

Wang said that he comes to Germany at a special time, as China is engaged in a united, nationwide effort to fight the novel coronavirus outbreak. The Chinese government has acted out of a strong sense of responsibility toward its own people and the international community and taken the most comprehensive, thorough and rigorous measures possible to control the outbreak. Thanks to these hard efforts, the epidemic is getting under control. As of 13 February, the number of new confirmed cases outside Hubei has seen a 10-day decline. Cure rates have kept rising. More than 6,000 patients have been cured and discharged from hospital. These figures and facts show that the epidemic is on the whole controllable and curable. As new effective drugs are being developed, we have every confidence, capacity and determination to win a full victory against the epidemic.

Wang said that from the very outset of this fight, China has been sharing information with the rest of the world in an open and transparent manner and working with Germany and other countries on epidemic prevention and control. China's efforts have effectively stemmed the spread of the epidemic to other countries, and the current number of infections in other countries is less than one percent of that in China. Such efforts have won praise from WHO and the rest of the international community. China has contributed to and made sacrifices for global public health.

Wang said that the Chinese economy has taken a hit from the outbreak, but this is temporary and China will endeavor to minimize the impact. We believe that once the epidemic is over, the pent-up consumer demand will be quickly unleashed and help fuel a robust economic rebound. We have confidence to achieve the socio-economic development targets set for this year, complete building a moderately prosperous society in all respects, and eliminate absolute poverty. The epidemic will not dampen China's cooperation with Germany. Instead, I believe that by enhancing health cooperation, we can bring new opportunities to German businesses.

Wang said that Chancellor Merkel and Foreign Minister Maas have voiced strong support for China's epidemic response on multiple occasions. I wish to use this opportunity to thank the German government and people for the understanding and support rendered to China. Virus knows no borders and requires a collective global response. Mutual understanding, trust and support across national boundaries is what matters most in this battle to safeguard human health.
