|Liu Yandong Meets with President Moon Jae-in of the ROK|
On February 26, 2018, Special Envoy of President Xi Jinping and Vice Premier Liu Yandong, who attended at invitation the closing ceremony of the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics, met with President Moon Jae-in of the Republic of Korea (ROK) at Cheong Wa Dae in Seoul.
Liu Yandong conveyed President Xi Jinping's greetings to Moon Jae-in and congratulated on the complete success of the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics. Liu Yandong expressed that President Xi Jinping sent Member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China Comrade Han Zheng and me as special envoys to respectively attend the opening and the closing ceremony of the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics, which fully demonstrated China's support for the ROK to hold this event and its high attention to the China-ROK relations. The two sides should keep the original intention of establishing diplomatic relations in mind, and take the 10th anniversary of the establishment of the China-ROK strategic cooperative partnership as an opportunity to earnestly implement the consensus reached by the two heads of state, continuously increase mutual trust, carry out mutually beneficial cooperation, strengthen exchanges in people-to-people and cultural fields such as education, science and technology, culture, sports, and health as well as properly handle the sensitive issues, so as to cement the political foundation and the public opinion foundation for the long-term and stable development of bilateral relations.
Liu Yandong expressed that the ROK and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) took the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics as an opportunity to resume the dialogue and interaction, which shows the common yearning for peace of the people on the Korean Peninsula. China is committed to peacefully solving the Korean Peninsula issue through dialogue and consultation. It is hoped that the ROK will strengthen confidence, eliminate interferences, continue promoting the ROK-DPRK relations for constant improvement and keep the current momentum of relaxation, so as to achieve progress in peace talks. China will continue playing a positive and constructive role in this regard.
Moon Jae-in asked Liu Yandong to convey the sincere greetings and best wishes to President Xi Jinping and thanked China for its special arrangement and strong support for the ROK's successful holding of the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics. The artistic performance of "Beijing 8 Minutes" on the closing ceremony last night was brilliant and he wished beforehand the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics a complete success. The ROK hopes to enhance exchanges and cooperation between the two countries in various fields and expects that China will continue providing support and cooperation in pushing forward the ROK-DPRK dialogue and the DPRK-US dialogue.
On February 25, Liu Yandong met with President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Thomas Bach in Pyeongchang. Liu Yandong noted that the successful holding of the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics shows the Olympic spirit of peace, friendship and cooperation as well as the strength and role of sports in safeguarding peace. As the Winter Olympics will officially enter "Beijing Time", the Chinese government attaches high importance to it, and various preparation works have been smoothly advanced. China will fulfill its promise in an all-round manner and uphold a green, sharing, open and clean concept to hold the Beijing Winter Olympics, and make it a wonderful, extraordinary and excellent Olympic event, in a bid to inject fresh impetus into the Olympic sports.
Thomas Bach thanked China for its support for the work of the IOC and the ROK's hosting of the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics. He believed that China will for sure successfully hold the 2022 Winter Olympics and make it another new and splendid model after the Beijing Summer Olympics.
During her stay in the ROK, Liu Yandong also visited the athletes of the Chinese sports delegation, the staff representatives of Beijing Organizing Committee for the 2022 Winter Olympic and the representatives of the Chinese media who reported the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics.
