Wang Yi: Combination of Sanction and Dialogue Is the Key to Solving Korean Peninsula Nuclear Issue

On September 7, 2017, Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Krishna Bahadur Mahara of Nepal jointly met the press in Beijing after their talks.

In responding a question concerning the Korean Peninsula nuclear issue from a Reuters' journalist, Wang Yi said that the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK)'s another nuclear missile test severely violated the UN Security Council resolutions and impacted the international nuclear non-proliferation system, to which China is resolutely opposed. China hopes the DPRK could have a clear picture of the situation, make correct judgment and choice, stop acting willfully and stop defying the consensus and baseline of the international community once again.

Wang Yi stressed that given the new changes emerging in the Peninsula situation, China supports the UN Security Council to take further moves and necessary measures regarding the issue, and will maintain close coordination with all parties on the basis of objectiveness, fairness and in a responsible manner. China believes that sanctions and pressure are just half of the key to addressing the issue and the other half is dialogue and negotiation. Only the combination of sanction and dialogue can the Peninsula nuclear issue be unlocked. Therefore, any new actions the international community takes aiming at the DPRK should be based on the principle of curbing the exploitation of the DPRK's nuclear missile and help to facilitate resuming dialogue and negotiation as soon as possible. Neither side should be neglected. The general trend of peaceful settlement must not be reversed, and the goal of the denuclearization in the Peninsula is unshakable. It is expected all member states of the UN Security Council to remain united, reach consensus and form a consistent voice on the issue.
