|Wang Yi Holds Telephone Talks with Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov of Russia|
On the evening of August 15, 2017, Foreign Minister Wang Yi held telephone talks with Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov of Russia at request, mainly exchanging views on the current Korean Peninsula situation.
Wang Yi said that the peaceful settlement of the Korean Peninsula nuclear issue completely conforms to the common interests of all parties concerned including China and Russia. China and Russia have maintained close coordination on the Peninsula nuclear issue, displaying the high level of China-Russia strategic coordination. Under the current situation, China and Russia need to further enhance strategic communication, join hands to control the situation, spare no efforts to safeguard stability and promote peace talks, and permit no one to stir up incidents on China and Russia's doorstep. At present, the priority is to "put the brakes" on mutually irritating rhetoric and actions between the Democratic People's Republic of Korea and the US, so as to cool down the tensions and head off a "August crisis".
Sergey Lavrov said that with the upcoming joint military exercise held by the US and the Republic of Korea, the situation in the Korean Peninsula could be intensified again. It is unacceptable to address the Korean Peninsula nuclear issue by means of military force. Instead, the political and diplomatic measures must be adopted to peacefully solve the issue. Russia is willing to strengthen communication and coordination with China and make joint endeavor to this end.
