Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi of Pakistan Meets with Wang Yang


On August 13, 2017 local time, Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi of Pakistan met in Islamabad with Vice Premier Wang Yang, who was in Pakistan for activities commemorating the 70th anniversary of the Independence of Pakistan. Both sides exchanged in-depth views on promoting China-Pakistan practical cooperation, reaching extensive consensus.

Conveying sincere greetings from Premier Li Keqiang to Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, Wang Yang noted that China and Pakistan are "iron friends", and enjoy all-weather strategic cooperative partnership with consistent mutual understanding and mutual support between the two countries. The success of President Xi Jinping’s visit to Pakistan in 2015 opened up a new chapter of China-Pakistan relations. In recent years, practical cooperation between the two countries has yielded fruitful outcomes with bilateral trade continuously increasing, the second phase of the negotiation on free trade agreement advancing smoothly and the construction of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor delivering delectable achievements, as well as people-to-people and cultural exchanges between both countries showcasing significant effectiveness.

Wang Yang expressed that China stands ready to work together with Pakistan in well implementing the important consensus reached by President Xi Jinping and the leaders of Pakistan, and propelling China-Pakistan practical cooperation for more achievements, in a bid to benefit the two peoples. The China-Pakistan Economic Corridor is the flagship project of the “Belt and Road” initiative. Both sides should reinforce coordination, well map out the long-range planning and top-level design and press ahead the project in a step-by-step and focused manner. At present, special attention should be paid in well grasping the early harvest projects. In line with the principle of wide consultation, joint construction and shared benefits, the Gwadar port construction should be accelerated, energy cooperation in thermal power, hydro power, solar energy, clean energy and other resources should be actively promoted, cooperation projects in transportation infrastructure such as highway, railway and urban railway should be well implemented, cooperation in terms of industrial parks should be deepened, and personnel training needs to be reinforced. China and Pakistan need to deeply tap potential for cooperation in economy and trade between the two countries, sustain growth of bilateral trade, facilitate trade balance, and intensify cooperation in education, science, technology, culture, health, youth, media and other fields, so as to consolidate the social foundation of China-Pakistan friendship.

Shahid Khaqan Abbasi expressed that Pakistan and China are brothers with bilateral friendship remaining unshakable with the passing of time. In recent years, Pakistani economy has embraced continuous growth, in which, support and assistance from China have played an important role. Pakistan absolutely agrees with the concept of China in promoting Pakistan-China practical cooperation, and will make joint efforts with China to continuously advance the construction of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor, enlarge the scale of bilateral trade, deepen and expand practical cooperation in various fields.

After the meeting, Wang Yang and Shahid Khaqan Abbasi jointly attended the completion and unveiling ceremonies of major cooperation projects between China and Pakistan, and the signing ceremony of bilateral cooperation documents.
