|Wang Yi Holds Talks with Foreign Secretary Alan Peter Cayetano of the Philippines|
On July 25, 2017 local time, Foreign Minister Wang Yi held talks in Manila with Foreign Secretary Alan Peter Cayetano of the Philippines.
Wang Yi expressed that under decision and guidance made by the two heads of state, China-Philippines relations have achieved comprehensive turnabout, conforming to the common interests of both countries and bringing tangible benefits to the two peoples. Wang Yi and Alan Peter Cayetano have visited each other within one month, which showed sound momentum after the improvement of bilateral relations, embodied China's importance and support to the Philippines and sent out the positive signal to the outside world. China is willing to, together with the Philippines, enhance high-level exchanges, elevate political mutual trust and deepen cooperation in such major areas as anti-terrorism, drug control, infrastructure, economy, trade, people's livelihood, defense, social and people-to-people and cultural engagement from two major directions of security and development, so as to continuously promote bilateral relations. China is ready to become a sincere cooperation partner of the Philippines in its national development and revitalization path, and has full confidence in development prospects of relations between both countries.
Wang Yi said that this year marks the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), and next year will be the 15th anniversary of the founding of China-ASEAN strategic partnership. The development of bilateral relations is faced with new opportunities. China appreciates works made by the Philippine side over the past six months since the country hold the presidency of the ASEAN, and will continue to support the Philippine side to well fulfill its responsibility as the rotating presidency. China is willing to make joint efforts with the Philippines to promote and enhance the docking of the "Belt and Road" initiative with ASEAN's development plan, deepen bilateral cooperation in connectivity and production capacity, and facilitate the process of regional integration. With the joint efforts made by China and ASEAN countries, the current situation in the South China Sea tends to be stable. The Chinese side stands ready to, together with the Philippines, strengthen communication and coordination, well safeguard positive momentum, well host a series of meetings on East Asian cooperation this year, focus on cooperation and properly solve differences, so as to push China-ASEAN relations and East Asian cooperation for greater development.
Alan Peter Cayetano said that since the comprehensive turnabout of bilateral relations, the two countries have deeply developed cooperation in various fields, with the two peoples enjoying a lot of benefits. Philippines-China relations have now entered a golden era, sharing broad prospects. The Philippines fully agrees with China's vision of developing bilateral relations in next stage and with the initiative on promoting cooperation in major areas, and will maintain close communication, implement the consensus reached by the two heads of state, and constantly deepen bilateral mutually beneficial cooperation. The country supports the "Belt and Road" initiative and connectivity idea proposed by China, and stands ready to take the holding of the ASEAN's rotating presidency as an opportunity to boost in-depth docking between ASEAN's development plan and the "Belt and Road" initiative, in a bid to advance ASEAN-China relations for in-depth development.
Alan Peter Cayetano stated that with joint efforts made by ASEAN countries and China, the implementation of the Declaration on the Code of Conduct on the South China Sea has achieved outcomes and the framework of a Code of Conduct in the South China Sea has been reached. The Philippines treasures the current sound situation centering on the South China Sea issue, and is willing to enhance coordination and communication with the Chinese side, prevent any accidents affecting each other's mutual trust, well safeguard peace and stability in the South China Sea and actively discuss and implement China' s idea of joint exploitation, so as to make the South China Sea truly benefit the two countries and people of various countries in this region.
After the meeting, Wang Yi and Alan Peter Cayetano jointly signed the Memorandum of Understanding on Cooperation between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China and the Department of Foreign Affairs of the Philippines, and jointly met the press.
