On June 23, 2017 local time, Foreign Minister Wang Yi held talks with Minister of Foreign Affairs and Emigrants Gebran Bassil of Lebanon in Beirut.
Wang Yi said that China supports Lebanon's efforts in seeking stability and development. Since the second half of last year, the domestic political process of Lebanon has made positive progress in the successful election of President and formation of government as well as the passing of new election law, achieving harmonious coexistence of different religions and civilizations and providing beneficial inspirations for solving the chaos in the Middle East. Both sides enjoy mutual supports on issues concerning respective core interests as well as solid political mutual trust. As Lebanon is located at the converging point of the ancient Silk Road, China welcomes the country to participate in the "Belt and Road" construction, and further expand bilateral cooperation opportunities and fields. China understands Lebanon's stance on the refugee issue, and advocates speeding up the settlement of hotspot issues to relieve the spreading of refugee crisis. Refugees are not immigrants, and all parties should create conditions and build environment through development for them to return home.
Gebran Bassil expressed that as a natural partner of China in the joint construction of the "Belt and Road", Lebanon stands ready to deepen bilateral practical cooperation under the framework. Both Lebanon and China adhere to the principle of non-interference in internal affairs, and advocates the advancement of the political settlement of hotspot issues according to respective national conditions and people's willingness. The refugee issue has brought Lebanon enormous pressure, and the international community should support the country's right demands on the issue. Appreciating China for its strong support to Lebanon's economic development, the country stands ready to further deepen bilateral trade cooperation and hopes Chinese enterprises could increase project investments in Lebanon and expand bilateral tourism and personnel exchanges.
