|Wang Yi Talks about Five Priority Areas of China-AU Cooperation|
On June 21, 2017, Foreign Minister Wang Yi talked about the five priority areas of cooperation between China and the African Union (AU) in a joint press conference with Chairperson of the AU Commission Moussa Faki Mahamat in Addis Ababa.
Wang Yi said that he and Chairperson Moussa Faki Mahamat had an in-depth discussion on how to create closer partnership between China and the AU. China stands ready to enhance cooperation with the AU in the five priority areas, which received active response from Chairperson Moussa Faki Mahamat, and the two sides reached consensus on this.
First is to align respective development strategy, with a focus on promoting the comprehensive and effective implementation of the outcomes of the Johannesburg Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation, especially giving play to AU' role in planning and coordination on major cooperation projects in infrastructure for the sake of the overall and sustainable development of the African integration process.. Second is to conduct peace and security cooperation. We should earnestly implement President Xi Jinping's declaration on military assistance to the AU, helping Africa to enhance their own capability in security and peacekeeping, and supporting the African people to solve the African problems with African method through concrete measures, while promoting the UN to support African countries' efforts in the cause of independent peacekeeping. Third is to strengthen public health cooperation. Currently, the focus is to well build one Africa center for disease control (CDC) and five sub-regional CDCs. We should support Africa in strengthening disease prevention and control system and capacity-building by drawing on the successful experience on China and Africa jointly fighting against Ebola. Fourth is to carry out cooperation in human resources development. Through increasing training quotas for the Africa, expanding training scale, exploring on new methods such as remote training and on-site training, we could constantly make innovation in cooperation manners and cultivate more talented people in need for the AU and Africa. Fifth is to intensify coordination on regional and international affairs, jointly deliver voices at multilateral arenas and safeguard the legitimate rights and interest of China, Africa as well as developing countries.
Wang Yi pointed out that the AU is the biggest and most influential inter-governmental organization in Africa, playing an important leading role in the cause of African peace and development. These five priority areas of cooperation being put forward by China is in full compliance with the current needs of Africa, in line with the urgent aspirations of the African people and the strategic direction mapped out in the AU 2063 Agenda. China stands ready to work with the AU to deepen cooperation in these aspects, create closer partnership, usher China-Africa unity and cooperation and facilitate the common development of China and Africa, so as to inject fresh impetus into the China-Africa comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership.
