Wang Yi: BRICS Has Greater Importance and Become More Mature

2017/06/19

On 19 June, 2017, at the press conference of the meeting of BRICS Ministers of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Minister Wang Yi was asked about his opinions about the doubts on the robust development momentum of the BRICS countries and views on the unequal development among the five members. Wang Yi expressed that these questions are not persuasive, since the BRICS has greater importance and become more mature.

Wang Yi said that recently, there has been many praises as well as some doubts on the BRICS in the international community, which at least indicates that the international community pays much attention to the BRICS and is looking forward to its development. There's an old Chinese saying goes as "Seeing is Believing", therefore, I would like the statistics to speak for themselves. According to statistics from the International Monetary Fund, in the recent decade, the economic gross of BRICS has increased from 12 percent to 23 percent of the world economy, with a growing contribution of more than half to the world economic growth. At present, the world economy remains in a sluggish state and the BRICS countries are of no exception, and face with challenges in its development. However, if being compared with other countries in a horizontal manner, the BRICS still dominates in economic development with a promising future.

Wang Yi pointed out that BRICS countries have established comprehensive cooperation mechanisms covering a wide range of areas. The mechanisms have been guided by annual meetings of leaders, including ten-odd ministerial meetings of security representatives and ministers of foreign affairs, industry and business councils, think tanks councils, and working groups of counter-terrorism and cyberspace. Moreover, BRICS countries have been exploring the communication and cooperation among legislative institutes, and especially meeting mechanism of permanent representatives established within significant multilateral institutions in cities such as New York, Geneva and Vienna, which helps to coordinate the stances of the five members on major international and regional affairs in time and speak with one voice. This year, the BRICS countries delivered their first joint statement at the UN conference, which sent the BRICS Voice in supporting the sustainable development and showed that the BRICS shouldered its due responsibilities in international affairs. Among five members of the BRICS, people-to-people and cultural exchanges are abundant with deepened non-governmental friendly exchanges, which constantly consolidates the public opinion and social foundation of cooperation among the five countries.

Wang Yi noted that the BRICS countries are in similar stages of development, shoulder similar historical missions, and share common development goals. The establishment of the BRICS mechanism embodies a trend of historic progress and the direction of human development, which contributes to a more stable and balanced world, benefits the advancement of the democratization of international relations and multi-polarization and helps to better maintain legitimate rights and interests of developing countries. Reviewing the achievements of BRICS cooperation in the past decade, the future cooperation among the BRICS still has powerful endogenous dynamic and great potential with broad space for cooperation and wide areas of cooperation. It is believed that by constantly deepening partnerships, the BRICS countries will certainly usher in a much brighter future.
