|Xi Jinping Holds Group Meeting with Heads of Foreign Delegations Attending the Meeting of BRICS Ministers of Foreign Affairs|
On June 19, 2017, President Xi Jinping held a group meeting with Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov of Russia, Minister of International Relations and Cooperation Maite Nkoana-Mashabane of South Africa, Foreign Minister Aloysio Nunes of Brazil and Minister of State for External Affairs Vijay Kumar Singh of India at the Great Hall of the People, who were in China for the meeting of BRICS Ministers of Foreign Affairs.
Xi Jinping extended congratulations on the success of the meeting and thanked other BRICS members for their support to China in holding the BRICS rotating presidency. Xi Jinping pointed out that under the current international situation filled with entangled turmoil, the BRICS countries are facing the common task of safeguarding domestic stability and development, creating a favorable international environment and promoting international order towards a more just and reasonable way. BRICS cooperation is an innovation, which transcends the old pattern of political and military alliance and establishes new relations of partnership instead of alliances; surpasses the old notion of drawing lines according to ideology and takes a new path of mutual respect and common progress; and surpasses the old mindset of zero-sum game and practices a new concept of mutual benefit and win-win cooperation. The cooperation mechanism fits the needs of the five nations as well as the historical trend.
Xi Jinping stressed that the BRICS cooperation mechanism has been in existence for 10 years and BRICS members have grasped the development as mainline, which not only benefits the people in the five countries but also offers a recipe for the world to address food and security problems. The BRICS countries are a community of shared interests and future. This year sees the opening of the second decade of the BRICS mechanism, and the member states shall carry forward the BRICS spirit featuring win-win cooperation, insist on the principles of wide consultation, joint contribution and shared benefits, hold high the banner of development and firmly follow the principle of multilateralism and the basic norms governing international relations. As long as we think and work toward the same goal, BRICS cooperation will be more productive and usher in a new golden decade.
All heads of delegations expressed gratitude to China for the great efforts in promoting BRICS cooperation as the BRICS rotating presidency, saying the BRICS is an emerging and promising mechanism. Under the new situation, all members should intensify coordination and cooperation, and jointly cope with various global challenges. It is believed that under the guidance of China as the presidency, BRICS cooperation will further enhance the well-being, position and international influence of the BRICS countries. All countries are willing to work with China, the presidency, to deeply advance BRICS cooperation and support China in hosting a successful BRICS Summit in Xiamen.
State Councilor Yang Jiechi was present at the meeting.
