Wang Yi Holds Talks with Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan of Singapore

2017/06/12

Wang Yi said that China-Singapore relations have enjoyed sound development since the beginning of this year. Both sides should continuously implement the important consensus reached by the two leaders, enhance strategic communication and strategic integration, and promote the China-Singapore all-round cooperative partnership advancing with the times. China welcomes Singapore's support and participation in the "Belt and Road" construction and is ready to work with the country to well implement inter-governmental memorandum of understanding on jointly building the "Belt and Road" signed by the two countries. China and Singapore could establish three major platforms of connectivity, financial cooperation and trilateral cooperation under the "Belt and Road" framework and conduct more practical cooperation.

Wang Yi noted that next year marks the 15th anniversary of the establishment of strategic partnership between China and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), and China-ASEAN relations will enter an important period linking the past and future. Both sides need to think about how to deepen cooperation at multiple levels in the world, Asia-Pacific, East Asia, ASEAN and the sub-region, and forge an upgrade version of strategic partnership with a higher level, more in-depth connotation and broader influence in order to make greater contributions to regional development and prosperity. Both sides should well plan the medium and long term development of bilateral relations, strengthen the integration of the "Belt and Road" initiative and ASEAN’s development plans, conclude the negotiation on Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership at an early date, press forward the construction of the East Asia Economic Community, and jointly lead the regional integration process. The Chinese side expects and believes that Singapore will contribute more wisdom and strength to the healthy and stable development of China-ASEAN relations and East Asia cooperation.

Vivian Balakrishnan expressed that Singapore has always viewed its relations with China from a strategic and long-term perspective, and supported the development and revitalization of China, which are believed as important benefits for the peace, stability, development and prosperity in East Asia. Singapore is willing to, together with China, continue to forge ahead with three flagship projects and deepen bilateral all-round cooperative partnership advancing with the times. The Singaporean side hopes to see China showing a greater leadership in international affairs so as to play a more active role in promoting the process of the global and regional economic integration. Fully agreeing with the establishment of three platforms for China-Singapore cooperation under the "Belt and Road" framework, Singapore stands ready to give play to its advantages and make unique contributions to boosting the "Belt and Road" construction. China-ASEAN relations currently enjoy a stable, active and vigorous development. Singapore stands ready to take the assumption of coordinator for ASEAN-China relations as well as the ASEAN rotating presidency in 2018 as opportunities to promote bilateral cooperation in all areas including politics, economy, trade, people-to-people and cultural exchanges and inject fresh impetus into the development of ASEAN-China relations.
