Special Envoy of President Xi Jinping and State Councilor Wang Yong Attends Commissioning Ceremony of Mombasa-Nairobi Railway in Kenya

On May 31, 2017 local time, Special Envoy of President Xi Jinping and State Councilor Wang Yong attended the commissioning ceremony of the Mombasa-Nairobi Standard Gauge Railway in Mombasa, Kenya, and extended warm congratulations on the completion and commissioning of the railway in the name of President Xi Jinping.

In the speech, Wang Yong said that the Mombasa-Nairobi railway has been an important early fruit that comes out of the implementation of the “Belt and Road” initiative proposed by President Xi Jinping and China-Africa Ten Major Cooperation Plans of the Johannesburg Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC), and serves as an exemplary project of the construction of the three networks and industrialization as well as production capacity cooperation between China and Africa. The completion and commissioning of the Mombasa-Nairobi railway bears great significance in boosting the development in Kenya and the regional countries, speeding up Africa's industrialization process, and promoting the reach of the “Belt and Road” to more African countries. China stands ready to work with Kenya to forge the Mombasa-Nairobi railway into a railway of prosperity and development for Kenya, and a new example of the transformation and upgrade of China-Africa cooperation.

In his speech, President Uhuru Kenyatta of Kenya expressed gratitude to President Xi Jinping, the Chinese government and people for the long term contributions to the national construction of Kenya. He noted that Kenya is willing to take the opportunity of the commissioning of the Mombasa-Nairobi railway to continuously deepen bilateral comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership.

In the meeting with President Uhuru Kenyatta before the commissioning ceremony, Wang Yong conveyed the sincere greetings of President Xi Jinping to Uhuru Kenyatta and expressed that always viewing and developing China-Kenya relations from a strategic and long-term perspective, the Chinese side stands ready to earnestly implement the important consensus reached by the leaders of both countries, and actively expand bilateral cooperation under the frameworks of the “Belt and Road” initiative and the FOCAC.
