Wang Yi Holds Talks with Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov of Russia

On May 26, 2017, Foreign Minister Wang Yi, who was in Russia for an official visit, held talks in Moscow with Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov of Russia.

Wang Yi said that not long ago, President Xi Jinping and President Vladimir Putin held their first meeting of 2017 at the Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation, during which they reached important consensus on the development of China-Russia relations in the next stage, and made strategic guidance. Both sides should abide by the consensus reached by the two heads of state, well maintain and develop bilateral relations, always regard each other as the priority of respective diplomacy, actively expand practical cooperation in various fields, and enhance coordination and cooperation in international and regional affairs, so as to better assist respective development and revitalization and better promote regional and world stability and development

Wang Yi stressed that China is willing to, together with Russia, earnestly make good preparation for the important bilateral high-level exchanges in the next stage, enhance the integration between the "Belt and Road" initiative and the Eurasian Economic Union (EEU), solidly advance bilateral cooperation in major projects, expand new cooperation areas, and elevate the level of bilateral practical cooperation. Both sides should jointly push forward the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) for continuous development and growth under the new circumstance, and ensure the upcoming Astana Summit a success. The two countries should strengthen communication and coordination within the BRICS mechanism, and promote unity and coordination among emerging economies and developing countries.

Sergey Lavrov said that Russia-China relations have been constantly developing on the basis of high-degree trust and mutual respect, reaching an unprecedented high level. As bilateral high-level exchanges are intensive in 2017, the Russian side stands ready to, together with China, intensify coordination, and make good preparation for President Xi Jinping's visit to Russia within this year. Both sides will deeply discuss the integration between the EEU and the "Belt and Road" initiative, push bilateral practical cooperation for greater development, enhance coordination and cooperation within the EU, the SCO, the BRICS countries and other multi-lateral mechanisms, and jointly play the role as a stabilizer in international hotspot issues.

Both sides also exchanged in-depth views on international and regional issues concerning the Korean Peninsula, Syria and Afghanistan.

After the talks, the two Foreign Ministers signed 2017 consultation plan between Chinese and Russian Foreign Ministries, and jointly met the press. Prior to the talks, Wang Yi laid a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier on Red Square.
