Statement by Ambassador Wu Haitao, Deputy Permanent Representative of China to the United Nations at the First Regular Session 2020 of the UNICEF Executive Board on the Statement of the Executive Director

2020/02/11

(UNICEF)

Madam President,

First of all, I would like to congratulate you on your election as President of UNICEF Executive Board 2020. I’d also like to congratulate other Bureau members. China will actively support your work and that of the Bureau.

China wishes to thank Executive Director Fore for her presentation. We appreciate her leadership of UNICEF in actively promoting the implementation of the CRC, supporting programme countries in addressing priority needs in their work on children, strengthening the protection of girls and improvement of girls' education, actively participating in the UNDS reform and further expanding the results of field work.

2020 is the first year of the "Decade of Action" for the international community to implement the sustainable development goals. We hope that UNICEF will take the mid-term review as an opportunity to take stock of its experience, take further advantage of its brand name, talent and technology, continue to uphold the principle of ownership and leadership by program countries, support their priority areas, and help them address the difficulties and challenges in the field of children's development.

Madam President,

China sincerely thanks Executive Director Fore and UNICEF for their valuable support at this critical moment in China's fight against the novel coronavirus pneumonia (NCP). Currently, tackling the epidemic of NCP is the most important and urgent task for China. The Chinese government has always put the safety of people's lives and health first. Under the leadership of President Xi Jinping, China has taken the most comprehensive and rigorous prevention and control measures and has been fighting the epidemic with all-out efforts. With openness, transparency and a sense of responsibility, China has been working with the international community through providing information on the epidemic in a timely manner and sharing the sequence of the coronavirus genome so as to deal with the epidemic collectively and effectively. The Secretary General Guterres has spoken highly of and provided his full support to China’s prevention and control efforts. Many countries have provided sincere assistance. At present, our work on all fronts has seen increasing results and we have the confidence and capability to prevail over the epidemic.

China and UNICEF have long been partners. China wishes to consolidate its cooperation with UNICEF in China, do a good job on its country program for the next cycle, actively carry out South-South cooperation and triangular cooperation, jointly implement the projects that promote maternal and child health in eight African countries, and support the development of children in other developing countries.

Thank you, Madam President.
