Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Hua Chunying's Regular Press Conference on December 20, 2012

Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Hua Chunying held a press conference on December 20, 2012.

Q: The Canadian intelligence agency warned its government that China National Offshore Oil Corporation's acquisition of Nexen would threaten the national security of Canada. What is China's comment?

A: This overseas acquisition and cooperation project is carried out by relevant Chinese enterprise in accordance with the principles of the market economy. We hope the project could be implemented smoothly for the mutual benefit of enterprises of the two countries and good return for both sides. It is groundless to discourage relevant cooperation in the name of national security. We hope relevant parties could be objective and impartial with Chinese enterprises' overseas investment and cooperation, and do more things that are conducive to promoting bilateral economic and trade cooperation.

Q: The presidential candidate Park Geun-Hye of the ROK's Saenuri Party made remarks about strengthening cooperation in Northeast Asia after she was elected as the new President. What is China's comment on it?

A: President Hu Jintao has sent a congratulatory message to Madam Park Geun-Hye on her election as the 18th President of the ROK. Since the establishment of diplomatic ties 20 years ago, China and the ROK have maintained healthy, stable and sustained development of bilateral relations. We look forward to working with the ROK side to further enhance strategic and political mutual trust, deepen exchanges and cooperation across the board, and push forward China-ROK relations.

As a close neighbour of the Korean Peninsula, China always follows closely the development of the situation on the Peninsula. We believe it is the common interest of all relevant parties and an irresistable trend to maintain peace and stability of the Peninsula and promote common development and prosperity in the region. We always support the north and south of the Peninsula in improving their relations through dialogue and pushing forward reconciliation and cooperation for the ultimate independent and peaceful reunification of the Peninsula.

It is vital for the region and the world to maintain peace and stability in Northeast Asia. We hope to strengthen communication, coordination and cooperation with the ROK and other relevant parties to jointly safeguard peace, stability and development in Northeast Asia.
