2012/11/27

Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Hong Lei held a press conference on November 26, 2012.

Q: It is reported that demonstrations against the new constitution took place in many places of Egypt recently. How does China comment on the current situation of Egypt?

A: We hope to see Egypt maintain political and social stability and smooth progress of its political transition process.

Q: It is reported that during the parliamentary election held in Catalonia of Spain yesterday, some political parties proposed independence. How does China comment?

A: We have noticed relevant report. This is an internal affair of Spain. We believe Spain has the wisdom and capability to handle this issue.

Q: First, Japanese coast guard reportedly said that Chinese maritime surveillance ships have left waters off the Diaoyu Islands. Please confirm. Second, it is reported that the ROK has completed the domestic procedures for the submission concerning the outer limits of its continental shelf in the East China Sea and will submit it in the near term. Has the ROK side communicated with the Chinese side on this issue? When will China submit the outer limits of its continental shelf in the East China Sea?

A: On your first question, Chinese maritime surveillance ships have kept conducting rights protection patrol in waters off the Diaoyu Islands of China.

On your second question, we have noticed relevant reports. China's position on the East China Sea is clear and consistent. Not long ago, the Chinese government announced that preparations for the partial submission concerning the outer limits of the continental shelf in the East China Sea were close to completion and would make a submission to the Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf (CLCS) in the near term.
