2012/11/03

Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Hong Lei held a press conference on November 2, 2012.

Q: It is reported that the Chinese national Liu Qiang who threw firebombs at the Japanese Embassy in the ROK will soon be released after serving a jail term, and Japan has asked the ROK to extradite him to Japan. The ROK Ministry of Justice said today that the Seoul High Procuratorate had requested the Seoul High Court to "review Liu Qiang's extradition" and it would ultimately decide whether to return him to China or extradite him to Japan according to ROK laws and regulations. How does China comment?

A: The Chinese government attaches great importance to the case. We hope and believe that the ROK side will handle it impartially and appropriately.

Q: How does China comment on the current situation over the Diaoyu Islands?

A: China's position on the issue of the Diaoyu Islands is clear. The pressing task now is for Japan to show sincerity and take actions, and solve this issue together with China through negotiation.

Q: How does China comment on the Spanish police's crackdown on criminal activities in mid-October and its impact?

A: China is deeply concerned over the Spanish police's crackdown on criminal activities since mid-October which has affected Chinese businessmen. We should not lose sight of the fact that the majority of the Chinese people in Spain engage in legal business and try to integrate into the local society, making positive contribution to the economic and social development of Spain. We hope the Spanish side will take measures as soon as possible to ensure the lawful rights and interests of the Chinese people in Spain and uphold friendship and cooperation between China and Spain.

Q: It is reported that today the Chinese maritime surveillance fleet entered the 12-nautical-mile-zone of the Diaoyu Islands. Please confirm.

A: Yes, Chinese maritime surveillance ships carried out routine rights protection patrol today in China's territorial waters off the Diaoyu Islands. It is a normal performance of duty by Chinese government ships in waters off the Diaoyu Islands to exercise jurisdiction.

After the press conference, a journalist asked the following question: Ukraine held a parliamentary election recently. Initial polling results show that the Party of Regions takes the lead, but some western countries accuse the election as inconsistent with international standards and a step backward for Ukrainian democracy. How does China comment?

Hong Lei remarked that the recent Ukrainian parliamentary election is an internal affair of the country, which reflects the will of the Ukrainian people. China respects the choice of the Ukrainian people and will continue to support Ukraine in taking the development path suitable to its national conditions. China is happy to see political stability, economic growth and constant improvement of people's livelihood in Ukraine. China is ready to work with the country to constantly push for new progress in China-Ukraine strategic partnership.
