Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Hong Lei's Regular Press Conference on October 29, 2012

Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Hong Lei held a press conference on October 29, 2012.

Hong Lei started the press conference with the following announcements:

First, at the invitation of Prime Minister Thongsing of Laos, Premier Wen Jiabao will attend the Ninth Asia-Europe Meeting in Vientiane, Laos from November 4 to 6 and pay an official visit to Laos.

During the Meeting, Premier Wen Jiabao will elaborate China's views on the current global economic and financial situation and propositions of strengthening Asia-Europe cooperation. He will meet with leaders of some participating countries and exchange views with them on bilateral relations and Asia-Europe cooperation.

During his visit to Laos, Premier Wen Jiabao will have an in-depth exchange of views with leaders of Laos on bilateral relations and issues of common interest to further consolidate bilateral good-neighborly friendship, deepen practical cooperation and promote the development of China-Laos comprehensive strategic partnership of cooperation.

Second, at the invitation of the Chinese side, the UN-AL Joint Special Representative on the Syrian issue Brahimi will pay a visit to China from October 30 to 31. China attaches great importance to and supports Joint Special Representative Brahimi's mediation efforts on the political resolution of the Syrian issue, and looks forward to having in-depth communication with him during the visit so as to jointly promote the process of political settlement of the Syrian issue.

Q: Members of the "East Turkistan" organization reportedly sneaked into Syria and joined battle. What is China's comment?

A: We have noted relevant reports. China opposes all forms of terrorism. The growing links between the "East Turkistan" terrorist forces led by the "East Turkistan Islamic Movement" and international terrorist organizations not only seriously harm China's national security, but also pose a threat to the peace and stability of other countries. The international community should maintain a high degree of vigilance, further strengthen cooperation and jointly fight against terrorist organizations including the "East Turkistan" terrorist forces.

Q: Syria reportedly failed to achieve a ceasefire during Eid al-Adha, resulting in heavy casualties. The Syrian government and opposition accused each other of violating the ceasefire proposal. What is China's comment?

A: China is worried and distressed at the casualties caused by the failure to achieve a ceasefire and continuous violent conflicts during Eid al-Adha in Syria. We urge all parties concerned in Syria to proceed from the fundamental and long-term interests of the country and the people, earnestly respond to and implement Joint Special Representative Brahimi's proposal, and immediately cease fire to avoid more casualties. Facts have proven that resolving the Syrian issue by force is no way out and a fair, peaceful and proper resolution of the Syrian issue could only be reached through political means.

Q: First, Chinese maritime surveillance ships reportedly monitored and obtained evidence of Japanese ships' infringement acts in waters off the Diaoyu Islands recently. According to other reports, the Japanese side has confirmed cancellation of the joint Japan-US exercise of retaking a remote island. What is China's comment on the current Diaoyu Islands situation? Second, will the Chinese and Japanese leaders meet during the Asia-Europe Meeting ?

A: On the first question, recently, we have kept asking the Japanese side to face up to the reality, admit the dispute, correct mistakes and make concrete efforts to solve the Diaoyu Islands issue. China keeps a close watch on Japan's movements. The Chinese government and people are determined and resolute in defending national sovereignty and territorial integrity. No outside pressure can change the will of the Chinese government and people.

On the second question, currently there is no arrangement of Sino-Japanese leaders' meeting during the Meeting. What is pressing now is that the Japanese side should concretely reflect on and correct mistakes, and make real efforts for the proper settlement of the Diaoyu Islands issue and elimination of obstacles to the development of Sino-Japanese relations.

Q: The UN-AL Joint Special Representative on the Syrian issue Brahimi's ceasefire proposal failed. Does China believe that he is still qualified for the mediation work of the Syrian crisis?

A: China appreciates and supports Joint Special Representative Brahimi's mediation efforts for the political resolution of the Syrian issue. We urge all parties concerned in Syria to earnestly respond to and implement Brahimi's proposal. We hope relevant parties will seize the opportunity to achieve an immediate ceasefire to avoid more casualties and create conditions for the launch and promotion of the political transition process led by the Syrian people at an early date.

Q: The Australian government recently released a white paper entitled "Australia in the Asian Century", saying Australia must seize the opportunities of the rapid development of Asia, especially those of China and India, to promote the development of Australia. What is China's comment?

A: Stability, development and cooperation represent the trend of the times and are in line with the common interests of Asia-Pacific countries. We hope that the release of the white paper "Australia in the Asian Century" will help all circles of Australia to have an objective and comprehensive understanding of Asia, promote mutual understanding, trust and cooperation between the Australian and Asian people and maintain peace, stability and development in the Asia-Pacific region.
