Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Hong Lei's Remarks on the Current Situation of the Korean Peninsula

2012/10/20

Q: The Western Front Command of the Korean People's Army made an announcement on October 19 to condemn relevant ROK groups' plan of scattering leaflets in the DPRK, saying that "the moment a minor movement for the scattering is captured, merciless military strike will be put into practice without warning". The ROK Defence Minister vowed on the same day that "if that happens, we will strike back at the origin of fire". What is China's comment?

A: China expresses concerns over the development of the current situation. As a close neighbour of the Korean Peninsula, China encourages the DPRK and the ROK to resolve their problems through dialogue and consultation and opposes any action that may rachet up tension. We are firmly opposed to armed conflicts on the Peninsula. We hope that parties concerned will keep calm, exercise restraint and refrain from taking provocative or radical actions so as to jointly maintain peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula.
