Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Hong Lei's Remarks on the Japanese House of Representatives' Resolution on the Diaoyu Islands Issue

2012/08/27

Q: It is reported that on August 24, the Japanese House of Representatives adopted a resolution on the Dokdo Island (known as Takeshima in Japan) and the Diaoyu Islands, claiming that the Diaoyu Islands are Japanese territory and condemning the landing on the Diaoyu Islands by activists from Hong Kong to assert sovereignty. The resolution also said that as close partners with shared interests, Japan and China should further deepen their strategic relationship of mutual benefit and stay committed to peace, stability and prosperity in the Asia-Pacific and beyond. What is China's comment?

A: The Diaoyu Island and its affiliated islands have been China's inherent territory since ancient times. The Japanese side's attempt to strengthen its claim on the Diaoyu Islands through adopting the resolution is illegal and futile and cannot change the fact that the Diaoyu Islands belong to China.

Since the Japanese side expressed its commitment to deepening China-Japan strategic relationship of mutual benefit and regional peace and stability, it should take concrete actions to this end.
