Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Hua Chunying's Remarks on Kenya Repatriating Telecommunications Fraud Suspects to China

2016/08/10

Q: The Chinese police has recently brought back from Kenya 40 Chinese telecoms fraud suspects including 5 from Taiwan by a chartered plane. What is your comment on that?

A: We have learnt from the relevant department that the 40 Chinese fraud suspects including 5 Taiwan residents and those deported by Kenya in April this year were related to the same case in which all victims were from and major evidence was found in the mainland. By bringing the suspects back to the mainland, the Chinese police will be able to get a whole picture of the case, make thorough investigation on it and effectively strike crimes.

The Chinese side highly commends and appreciates Kenya's repatriation of 77 suspects from both sides of the Taiwan Straits to the mainland in April and the rest 40 suspects including 5 from Taiwan on August 8 in pursuant to the one-China principle. It delivered a blow to the telecoms fraud by Chinese in foreign countries and demonstrated the resolve of China and Kenya to jointly fight cross-border crimes.

The competent authorities of China will treat the suspects deported from Kenya in accordance with the law. This is an important manifestation of the Chinese government's law-based state governance and is expected to win understanding and support from compatriots from across the Straits and the international community.
