Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Hong Lei's Remarks on US Secretary of State's Comments on China's Establishment of the Air Defence Identification Zone in the East China Sea

2014/02/08

Q: As media reports, while speaking to the press with Japanese Foreign Minister on February 7, US Secretary of State John Kerry made remarks on China's establishment of the Air Defence Identification Zone (ADIZ) in the East China Sea. What is China's comment?

A: Establishing the ADIZ in the East China Sea is China's justifiable right as a sovereign state and totally in line with international laws and practices. Given the fact that it was as early as over 60 years ago that the US set up an ADIZ, is the US in any position to make irresponsible accusations against the exercise of justifiable and legitimate right by the Chinese side?! We urge the US to stop making irresponsible comments so as not to harm regional stability and China-US relations.
