Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Hong Lei's Remarks on the Possible Use of Chemical Weapons in Syria

Q: Several Syrian opposition parties claimed that the Syrian government forces used chemical weapons near Damascus on August 21, killing 700 people. The Syrian military and Information Minister said that the accusation was completely groundless. What's China's comment? Does China support the UN's investigation?

A: China's position is clear-cut. China is firmly opposed to the use of chemical weapons by any party in Syria. China supports the UN Secretariat in carrying out independent, objective, impartial and professional investigation on the alleged use of chemical weapons in accordance with relevant UN resolutions. The UN investigating team has already arrived in Syria and launched investigation. China hopes and believes that the team can have full consultation with the Syrian government to ensure smooth investigation. All sides should avoid making prejudgement on the result of the investigation before the truth is found out. The current situation underscores again the importance and urgency of the political solution of the Syrian issue. China calls on all sides to work together to hold the second Geneva Conference on Syria as soon as possible and launch an inclusive political transition process.
