Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Hong Lei's Remarks on China Coast Guard Vessels' Law Enforcement Patrol in Waters off the Diaoyu Islands

2013/08/08

Q: The Japanese government claimed on August 8 that China Coast Guard vessels have completed the longest patrol in waters off the Diaoyu Islands. Please confirm and what is China's comment?

A: On August 7, a Japanese right-wing boat illegally entered the territorial waters of China's Diaoyu Islands. China Coast Guard vessels took law-enforcement action against the Japanese boat according to law. China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Embassy in Japan have made solemn representations and strong protest with the Japanese side respectively. The Japanese right-wing boat has left China's territorial waters.

I want to reiterate that the Diaoyu Island and its affiliated islands have been China's inherent territory since ancient times. Chinese government vessels' patrol and law enforcement in waters off the Diaoyu Islands is an exercise of inherent national sovereignty. The Japanese side should be honest with history and facts, stop all provocative words and deeds and make real efforts to properly manage and solve the issue.
