Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Hua Chunying's Remarks on the Issue of the Diaoyu Islands

Q: It is reported that when speaking to officers at the Ishigaki Coast Guard Office on July 17, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said that there have been continuous provocative actions against Japan's territorial lands, waters, airspace and sovereignty. Chinese government vessels approaching or roaming the nearby waters have made the environment increasingly challenging for the coast guard. In his speech to people on the Ishigaki Island, Abe said that the Diaoyu Islands were an inherent part of Japan's territory, and the Japanese side would never make concessions to China. What is China's comment?

A: The Diaoyu Islands have been China's inherent territory since ancient times. China has indisputable sovereignty over them. The Chinese government will continue to take necessary means to resolutely safeguard its territorial sovereignty over the Diaoyu Islands. We urge the Japanese side to be honest with history and facts, stop all provocative words and deeds that are detrimental to China's territorial sovereignty and work for a proper settlement of the issue of the Diaoyu Islands through dialogues.
