Q: It is learned that the Arctic Council Ministerial Meeting held in Sweden on May 15 decided to grant China the official observer status. What is China's comment?

A: China appreciates and welcomes the Arctic Council's decision of granting China the official observer status. China supports the Council's principles and purposes, recognizes Arctic countries' sovereignty, sovereign rights and jurisdiction in the Arctic region as well as their leading role in the Council and respects the values, interests, culture and tradition of the indigenous people and other people living in the Arctic region. The decision made by the Council will facilitate China's communication and cooperation with relevant parties on Arctic affairs within the framework of the Council, so as to make contribution to the work of the Council and promote peace, stability and sustainable development of the Arctic region.
