Q: It is reported that a hot-air balloon with 20 tourists on board crashed in Luxor of Egypt on February 26, killing 19 including 9 Hong Kong tourists. Please brief us on the specifics and what the Chinese side has done.

A: A hot-air balloon with 20 tourists on board crashed in Luxor of Egypt on the afternoon of February 26 Beijing time, killing 9 Hong Kong tourists. The Chinese government attaches great importance to the incident. Upon learning it, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) urgently sent a working group to Egypt on the evening of February 26 to assist in dealing with the aftermath. The Chinese Embassy in Egypt and the Office of Commissioner of the MFA in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) launched the contingency mechanism at once, kept close communication with relevant departments of the HKSAR government and provided assistance to staff of the SAR government, the travel agency and families of the tourists in their immediate travel to Egypt. The Chinese Embassy in Egypt has sent staff to the scene. The working group, the Chinese Embassy in Egypt and the Office of Commissioner in the HKSAR will go all out to assist the bereaved families in dealing with the aftermath in Egypt.
