Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Hua Chunying's Regular Press Conference on February 8, 2013

Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Hua Chunying held a press conference on February 8, 2013.

Q: The Chinese Defense Ministry released a statement on February 8 that Japan's allegation of Chinese naval ships locking fire-control radar on Japanese ships and planes was untrue. Japan said it could not accept China's view at all. How does China comment on it?

A: Competent Chinese authority has already disclosed the truth, pointing out that Japan's allegation is completely making something out of nothing.

What needs to be pointed out is that since Japan provoked the Diaoyu Islands dispute, while taking neccessary measures to defend national territorial sovereignty, China has been exercising restraint, acting responsibly and committed to managing and resolving the problem through dialogue and consultation. However, instead of correcting its mistakes, Japan stepped up its actions by sending a large number of ships and planes to constantly infringe upon China's sovereignty. Japanese ships and planes have long been tracking and monitoring at close range Chinese naval ships which were carrying out normal drills in international waters, which is the root cause of air and maritime security issues between China and Japan. In this case, Japan deliberately spread false information to smear China's image and play up "China threat", which has created tension and misled international opinion. We cannot help but ask what is Japan aiming for? We stay highly vigilant over Japan's true intention. We hope Japan could give up on such petty tricks and come back to the right track of resolving the issue through dialogue.

Q: Recently, Bahrain officially announced the resumption of national reconciliation and dialogue on February 10. How does China comment?

A: China welcomes Bahrain's announcement of resumption of national reconciliation and dialogue and hopes that relevant parties in the country could continue to properly resolve differences through dialogue and other peaceful means so as to realize long-term stability and development of the country.

During the Spring Festival, the regular press conference will be adjourned from Monday, February 11 to Friday, February 15 and resumed on Monday, February 18. The Spokesperson's Office will receive journalists' questions through phone calls during the recess.

I would like to end by wishing you all a happy Spring Festival on behalf of the Information Department of the Foreign Ministry.

Thank you!
