Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Hong Lei held a press conference on January 31, 2013.

Hong Lei started the press conference with the following announcement:

Chairman Jia Qinglin of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference will attend the cremation ceremony of King Father Norodom Sihanouk in Cambodia from February 3 to 4 and pay an official goodwill visit to Malaysia from February 4 to 7 at the invitation of the Malaysian government.

During his special trip to Cambodia for the cremation ceremony of King Father Norodom Sihanouk, Chairman Jia Qinglin will meet with Cambodian Queen Mother Norodom Monineath Sihanouk, King Norodom Sihamoni and Prime Minister Hun Sen to convey the deep grief of the 1.3 billion Chinese people over the King Father. He will also express China's resolve to join hands with Cambodia to carry on China-Cambodia traditional friendship from generation to generation and exchange views with the Cambodian side on deepening China-Cambodia comprehensive strategic cooperation as well as international and regional issues of common interest.

During his visit to Malaysia, Chairman Jia Qinglin will meet with Yang di-Pertuan Agong Tuanku Abdul Halim, Prime Minister Mohd Najib Abdul Razak and President of the Dewan Negara Abu Zahar and exchange views with the Malaysian side on pushing forward China-Malaysia strategic cooperation as well as international and regional issues of common interest. Chairman Jia Qinglin will also co-chair the inauguration ceremony of the Malaysia-China Kuantan Industrial Park with Prime Minister Najib and attend a welcoming reception hosted by the overseas Chinese in Malaysia.

Q: US special envoy for Sudan and South Sudan reportedly said that China needs to move beyond a narrow focus on oil benefits from Sudan and South Sudan while ignoring helping resolve political differences and border disputes between the two countries. What is China's comment?

A: As a friendly country to both Sudan and South Sudan, China always upholds a fair position on facilitating peace talks between them and has made contributions to promoting bilateral negotiations, which is widely recognized and appreciated by the international community including Sudan, South Sudan and the African Union. China will work with the international community to play a positive and constructive role in the realization of peace, stability and development in Sudan and South Sudan.

Q: Chairman of the US House Foreign Affairs Committee Edward Royce reportedly said on January 29 that China should agree to international arbitration on the South China Sea dispute between China and the Philippines to avoid a crisis. What is China's comment?

A: We stated our position last week on the Philippines' claim to ask for international arbitration on the South China Sea dispute between China and the Phillipines. China disapproves of such an act that violates consensus and replaces it by another one.

Q: Israeli fighter jets reportedly staged an air strike at the suburb of Damascus in Syria which caused casualties. What is China's comment?

A: We have noted relevant reports. The current situation in the region is complex and sensitive. We hope relevant parties would refrain from taking actions that may escalate the tension and jointly safeguard regional peace and stability.

Q: It is reported that the Pakistani government yesterday approved to transfer the management of Gwadar port to a Chinese company. What is China's comment?

A: China and Pakistan are friendly neighbours. Chinese companies have long been actively participating in Pakistani foreign cooperation projects in all fields. China will actively support anything that is conducive to China-Pakistan friendship as well as development and prosperity of Pakistan.
