Remarks by Ambassador LIU Jieyi at the Agreement Signing Ceremony Marking Xiamen Airlines' Support of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals

2017/02/15

Your Excellency Under-Secretary-General Cristina Gallach,

Your Excellency Under-Secretary-General Wu Hongbo,

Your Excellency Assistant Secretary-General Xu Haoliang,

President and CEO of Xiamen Airlines Mr. Zhao Dong,

Ladies and Gentlemen,

I am honored to speak at today’s event and witness Xiamen Airlines’ commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Needless to say, the United Nations is the fulcrum to leverage collective wisdom and efforts of the international community to address global challenges. To achieve common development for all has always been the central mission of the United Nations.

In September 2015, the United Nations Sustainable Development Summit adopted the 2030 Agenda, mapping out the goals for sustainable development at the national level and development cooperation at the international level over the next 15 years. The Agenda embodies the shared future for the entire international community.

Critical as it is, the Agenda is only as good as its implementation. At the Summit, Chinese President Xi Jinping called on the international community to redouble efforts for the joint implementation of the 2030 Agenda and achieve win-win results through cooperation.

The Hangzhou G20 Summit last September was part of these efforts. More developing countries participated in it than previous Summits. For the first time, development was given priority in the global macro-policy framework. For the first time, a groundbreaking Action Plan on the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development was adopted. The Summit made important contribution to international cooperation for common development and shared prosperity.

To implement the 2030 Agenda is a global cause. We must focus on key areas such as eradicating poverty and hunger, and helping developing countries enhance their self-development capacity. We must ensure that global governance is built on wide consultation, joint participation and shared benefits. We must steer globalization towards a healthy and balanced course.

Public awareness and participation is fundamental to the implementation of the SDGs. As an important player in this process, business and enterprises can surely reinforce government’s efforts in fostering international development cooperation. China commends the UN Secretariat’s efforts to launch campaigns for the SDGs to reach all corners of the world. The Chinese Government is encouraging the Chinese public, Chinese enterprises and other social entities to actively promote and implement the SDGs.

Today, Xiamen Airlines will sign a cooperation agreement with the United Nations and formally commit itself to supporting the SDGs. Xiamen Airlines will help carry the message of SDGs around the globe through sound systems on board and in lounges, printed magazines and painting one of its airplanes with “Sustainable Development Goals”. In so doing, Xiamen Airlines demonstrates its own strong commitment to corporate social responsibilities, and also showcases Chinese enterprises’ concrete actions to support SDGs implementation. Hopefully, this exemplary role will motivate other enterprises in China and other countries to join in the global SDGs cause.

The 2030 Agenda bears special significance for China. It traverses a crucial period for China to achieve the “First Centenary Goals” by 2021 (to double the 2010 GDP and per capita income of urban and rural residents and finish building a society of initial prosperity in all respects when the Communist Party of China celebrates its centenary) and set out for the “Second Centenary Goals” by 2049 (to turn China into a modern socialist country that is strong, prosperous, democratic, culturally advanced and harmonious when the People’s Republic of China marks its centenary). China will implement the 2030 Agenda with innovative, coordinated, green, open and shared development and continue to do its level best to contribute to the global development cause. In conclusion, let me express the hope that more and more enterprises from China and across the world will follow Xiamen Airlines’ lead and make their contributions to the attainment of the SDGs.
